The NIRS (near-infrared spectroscopy) Working Group unites colleagues who work in the field of feedstuff and plant component analysis (such as dry mass, crude protein, crude fibre or starch). Its 17 members work at regional agricultural test and research institutes, regional agencies, chambers of agriculture, universities or private sector companies. The working group offers both, assistance in the proper use of NIR-spectroscopy and support in quality assurance to other laboratories. They act as a platform for the exchange of technical information and provide a forum for discussing relevant issues. The group successfully drafted the VDLUFA position paper on “Anwendung der Nah-Infrarot-Spektroskopie bei der Untersuchung von Futtermitteln und pflanzlichen Produkten” (available in German only) and was also involved in the preparation of DIN EN ISO 12099 (Guidelines for the application of near infrared spectrometry), in the implementation of comparative ring tests between reference chemistry and NIR analysis and in carrying out training courses within VDLUFA on the use of NIR analysis. The NIRS group closely cooperates with VDLUFA Qualitätssicherung NIRS GmbH and with the Basic Feed Working Group. The group utilises and proactively supports the NIR network within VDLUFA, for example in the analysis of silo maize as part of the variety testing programme. During their annual meetings, the group members exchange information and discuss current issues such as approaches to standardisation and changes in equipment.
